Ayaan Hirsi Ali has written a critical review of a recent book by Lee Harris, The Suicide of Reason: Radical Islam’s Threat to the Enlightenment (Basic Books, 2007) in which she argues that religious extremism has its roots in the Romanticist rejection of Enlightenment values - especially reason. The review appeared in the Jan. 6 issue of the New York Times Book Review.
On May 16, 2006, the Netherlands initiated procedures to deport Liberal MP Ayaan Hirsi Ali for lying to the immigration services. She chose to resign her office and planned to move to the United States. The Somali born Muslim woman left her native country to avoid a forced arranged marriage and was outspoken about discrimination against and violence toward women in Muslim countries. She collaborated with murdered Dutch filmaker Theo Van Gogh on a film titled “Submission” writing the screenplay for the movie.
