Summary: The Iranian government has barred more than 2000 prospective candidates from running in the parliamentary elections, which are coming up on March 14th. The candidates who were banned are almost all of a reformist bent, many of whom have served under former Iranian President (and reformist) Mohammad Khatani during his time in power. This upcoming election, according to Al-Jazeera, is going to be seen as “a test of [President] Ahmadinejad’s grip on power”. The government said that despite the initial decisions, barred candidates would be allowed an appeal “through legal channels”, to avoid candidates raising a fuss with the press.
