Summary
Hamas and Israelis trade attacks; the vice cycle of reciprocal actions never seems to end. Amidst of Gaza crisis, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is to visit the Middle East next week. On Thursday in Tokyo, she met with Mr. Olmert who was coincidentally visiting
Japan. He promised to continue peace talks with Mr. Abbas. Mr. Abbas implied in his recent interview that Hamas and Al-Qaeda have secret alliances. His comment aroused criticisms from Arab Media. Al-Hayat’s Zuheir Kossibati wrote that it increased legitimacy of Israelis “who are eager to commit massacres against the Palestinians in the name of combating terror.” Another columnist of Al-Hayat, Randa Takieddaine denounced Israel’s hostile policies towards Gazans, which in turn boosted Hamas popularity and weakened Fatah’s leadership.
Response
Above all, I am appalled at the life-threatening terror that was imposed on both Israelis and Palestinians by this “daily war” and sorry that many efforts that both parties have made so far became vain. However, I do not think the continuous negotiation between the Israeli government and the Fatah authority will make this situation any better. Mr.Abbas is unwilling to regain control over the Gaza Strip or to initiate dialogue with the dissident faction.
