In the wake of an Israeli blockade of the Gaza strip, which has caused Hamas officials to shut down the area’s only power plant, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas appealed to the UN, the Mideast Quartet, and the Arab League to exert pressure on Israel to lift the blockade to resume the import of fuel supplies. The main concern is with the hospitals, which cannot properly treat patients without electricity.
This is just one more event in the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Now there is a dilemma. A blockade works great to choke a rival military, but when innocent civilians, most of whom do not support Hamas, are brought into the picture, there becomes a question of a possible humanitarian crisis. Because of this, should Israel remove the blockade? If they do, will the removal have positive, negative, or neutral effects on the situation in the long run? What should the UN, Mideast Quartet, and Arab League do? Should they take sides, or just stay neutral?
