Sharla Musabih, an American-born Emirati, is fighting a lonely battle to raise human rights of women in the United Arab Emirites. She takes care of women who are seeking refuges away from violent husbands and foreign prostitutes who are eager to go back to their home countries. Her radical approaches, such as interviews with foreign media and impudent confrontations with police officers who fail to protect abused women, have enraged the local authorities. In the Arab world, marital matters are not usually discussed in public; therefore, domestic violence is not taken seriously. Furthermore, some extremists believe that husbands have rights to beat their wives.
*This point relates to our previous discussion about whether Islam allows domestic violence or not.
