After watching “The Band’s Visit,” some were enthralled hearing what the actors and filmmakers had to say about their experience working one-on-one together as Arabs and Jews. David Shipler in his book Arab and Jew (New York: Penguin Books, 1986) provides penetrating psychological portraits of the parties to the Arab-Israeli conflict and is highly recommended reading. We will watch portions of his film by the same title later in the course.
