Iraq Gunmen Launch Deadly Ambush

In a small Iraqi village close to the city of Baquba (located in the Diyala Province North-east of Baghdad), at least 35 people were killed by the Al-Qaeda.  The victims were primarily policemen and Sunni Arab fighters who opposed to the Al-Qaeda.  They first attacked a checkpoint and then opened fire on the police and Sunni Arab fighters.  The Diyala Province has been called a “scene of sustained violence.”  In July of 2008, Iraqi forces and U.S. military tried to get rid of the insurgents in the area, but the attempt was futile.

Since 2006, 100 thousand “former anti-U.S. Sunni Arab insurgents has joined so-called Awakening Councils.”  An Awakening Council is a group of former insurgents from various tribes in Iraq that have made a pledge to fight against al-Qaeda terrorists.  These are United States funded programs.  But after this recent attack (which occurred on September 25), it showed that these programs do not work especially considering that insurgents are thought to be regrouping in the Diyala Province.  The money being spent on the Awakening Councils could be directed to something else.

After what happened in Diyala, do you think these former insurgents can be trusted? OR do you think that they’ll just rebel against us again?
