Abbas Boosts West Bank Security

More than 500 Palestinian police reinforcements have been deployed in the city of Hebron in the West Bank. Hebron is city of 150000 Palestinians and contains a pocket of a few hundred Jews. It is also home to burial site of Abraham (sacred to both Jews and Muslims). The Palestinian forces will not guard the center of Hebron where there are already Israeli troop stationed.

The re-stationing of troops is to strengthen President Mahmoud Abba’s control in the West Bank. The Palestinian authorities state that this move is as an attempt to bring a greater sense of security to the people. Yet ever since 2007 when Hamas took control of Gaza from the Fatah (Affiliated with Abbas) Abbas has taken measures in the West Bank to eliminate Hamas groups and supporters. Fawzi Barhoum, a spokesman for Hamas, feels this act shows the West Bank co-operation with Israeli occupation. And see this as a tactical move against Hamas.
