Interior Minister Ali Kordan faces impeachment after he admitted to faking a degree from Oxford University. Conservatives and moderate MPs have called on Kordan to resign or be dismissed from cabinet. The president of Iran, however, does not approve of the impeachment, saying that “the impeachment was illegal as Mr. Kordan committed no wrongdoing while in office.” If Kordan is impeached, the Iranian administration will lose him as an interior minister, someone who is in charge of public safety, policing, national security and immigration matters.

It is rare for a Minister of the Interior of a Middle East nation - typically a very powerful person - to be challenged in this way by an entire arm of the government (in this case the parliament). Many see this event as even more of a challenge to Kordan’s boss, President Ahmadinejad. With elections coming in the spring, a clash between President and legislature could presage change in Iran. However, as long as Ayatollah Ali Khameini remains in power as Iran’s Supreme Leader, don’t look for more than cosmetic changes.
