Article Summary: Israel sealed off the border with Gaza on November 5th in response to rocket attacks. An Israeli spokesman claimed that HAMAS was responsible for the rocket attacks. As a result of the border closing, the UN Relief and Works Agency was unable to replenish its supplies. The UN Agency ran out of food this past Friday (11/14/08).
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has asked Israel to allow resupply for humanitarian aid.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmer and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas are planning to meet on Monday to discuss the border issue and a possible cease-fire agreement.
Your Reaction: It is unfortunate that this border struggle had to affect humanitarian aid. The moral struggle here reminded me of our conversation in class the other day about sanctions in Iraq after the first gulf war, which hurt the poor and hardly affected the corrupt government regime. I think humanitarian aid should always be allowed because if it is not the poorest members of society suffer as a result of a conflict their government has.
