Time: November 19, 2008
Place: Jerusalem, Israel
Key People: Secretary General of the UN Ban Ki-Moon, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert,
Summary:
Secretary General of UN Ban Ki-Moon called for Prime Minister of Israel Ehud Olmert to share in his “deep concern” about the grave situation in Gaza. Over the past few weeks, the tension between the Israeli army and the Palestinian forces has risen. If the United Nations resumes its passage of an order, it will distribute 33 trucks and provision to Israel. Provisions will also be sent to Gaza, which was partially closed off during the Jewish holidays.
Your Response:
After learning about the difficulties the UN encountered in Iraq, I have a new perspective on the challenges of peacekeeping. From everything I’ve been reading recently, it seems that the friction between Israelis and Palestinians has been increasing in recent weeks. But almost everything I have read has been in American newspapers. The biggest difference in coverage I noticed is that American newspapers tend to give less coverage and emphasis to the work of the UN. American press does cover the Israeli-Palestinian conflict extensively, but the day-to-day compromising and requests of UN seem to go under the radar most of the time. I was surprised to see an article, when browsing the widely read French newspaper, Le Monde, that focused on the role of the UN. I am curious why that is. . . I wonder if American neglect of UN coverage is a result of America’s ties to Israel, or simply a disinclination to report on “daily” activity.
